The Announcement
Acting Minister for Police and Emergency Services Deb Frecklington said 61 new constables would be sworn into the Queensland Police Service tonight, with 18 of them headed to Logan and the Gold Coast.
“These 61 new recruits are stepping into one of the most important roles in our community, protecting Queenslanders and keeping our streets safe,” Frecklington said.
She said the recruits were joining the frontline “at a time when their presence matters most” as the government worked to address youth crime.
Where They Are Going
The 61 officers will be spread across the state. Logan and the Gold Coast share the largest allocation with 18 officers between them.
Nine officers will go to the Brisbane region, and 10 to the Southern region covering Ipswich and Toowoomba. Seven will be deployed to the North Coast region including Moreton and the Wide Bay, and eight to the Far North including Cairns and Thursday Island. Six will serve in the Northern region including Townsville, with three going to Central Queensland including Mackay and the Whitsundays.
Who They Are
The cohort ranges in age from 19 to 49 and includes recruits with backgrounds in defence, healthcare, construction, hospitality and retail. Some were born overseas, in countries including England, India, Tanzania and Brazil.
Queensland Police Service Acting Commissioner Brett Pointing said the new officers were ready to serve their communities.
“I commend our newest officers for choosing a career dedicated to community service,” Pointing said.
“With their diverse skills, experiences and perspectives, these officers are well placed to serve their communities with courage and integrity and meaningfully contribute to a safer Queensland.”
Bigger Picture
Tonight’s intake brings the total number of new recruits delivered under the Crisafulli Government to 1,625 in less than 18 months. The government was elected on a commitment to swear in 1,600 new officers.
