Brisbane’s Biggest Rail Shutdown in Years Hits Logan Hardest

South East Queensland commuters face nearly a month of bus replacements and line closures from 3 to 26 April as six rail projects run at once.

The Shutdown

From Friday 3 April to Sunday 26 April, Translink has confirmed one of the most disruptive rail shutdowns in years. Buses will replace trains across large sections of the South East Queensland network for weeks at a time.

Six separate projects are running at once: Cross River Rail construction, the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project, the Loganlea Station relocation, new European Train Control System signalling, the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade, and the new Ormeau rail facility.

Easter and the First Week

The shutdown kicks off over Easter, from Good Friday 3 April through Monday 6 April, with buses replacing trains on sections of the Beenleigh, Gold Coast, Cleveland, Ferny Grove and Springfield lines. From 7 to 10 April, the Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines will be closed between Banoon and Boggo Road, cutting off direct train access from Logan into the city.

Mid-April: Logan Closures Expand

From Saturday 11 April, the closure zone on the Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines stretches further south. Buses will replace trains between Beenleigh and Kuraby. Anyone boarding at Beenleigh, Holmview, Edens Landing, Bethania, Loganlea, Meadowbrook, or any station south of Kuraby will need to catch a replacement bus. This expanded closure runs through to Sunday 19 April.

Late April: Slower Services

From Monday 20 April, trains return to parts of the corridor but not in normal form. The Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines will run as a combined stopping-all-stations service between Beenleigh and Roma Street. Express services disappear. A trip that normally takes 45 minutes could stretch past an hour.

Logan Commuters Hit Hardest

The Logan and Beenleigh corridor is the most affected part of the network. The Loganlea Station relocation project means that station is closed entirely, with passengers redirected to Meadowbrook or Bethania.

Translink said the works were part of a once-in-a-generation transformation of the SEQ rail network.

“We understand these closures are disruptive and we thank passengers for their patience,” a Translink spokesperson said.

Commuters on the Logan corridor should check the Translink Journey Planner or app before travelling, as impacts change week by week. Full details are available at translink.com.au.
